How To Practice

PRACTICE

I though for this first blog post I would talk about practice. Maybe not the most sexy of topics for my first post. But it is something that I have lots of experience talking about. Students often come to classes talking about a lack of practice and a lack of time.

It can be challenging when you have so many things you have to do in a normal week.

  1. Don’t make unachievable goals

I often have students say things like ‘I’m going to practice this every day for an hour. Usually after a good lesson when they are feeling pumped. Then usually after a busy week I ask them, how was your guitar practice this week. And they sometimes reply, I haven’t had any time.

From speaking with many students, this can come from setting this hour expectation. You miss the first day, then you feel like you have to practice for 2 hours, miss the third day, now you feel like you have 3 hours to do, then the pressure gets much and you can’t bring yourself to sit there and practice for 3 hours, so you just do something else instead.
