The Ear Training Workshop is designed for beginner and intermediate guitarists.

You don't need to be an advanced player or already be good at learning songs by ear. If you know some basic chords, can play a few songs and are comfortable finding your way around the guitar, you'll be able to take part.

The whole point is to help you take your first — or next — steps towards working music out for yourself.

I'll explain the theory we need as we go, and everything will be taught practically on the guitar. Understanding some basic theory may help, but it isn't a requirement.

Absolutely not.

You don't need perfect pitch, great relative pitch or years of ear-training experience.

Ear training is a skill that can be developed. I'll show you a process for knowing what to listen for, what to try on the guitar and what to do when you're stuck.

If you've literally just picked up the guitar for the first time, I'd recommend getting comfortable with some basic chords and songs first.

But if you're an early-stage guitarist who can already play a little and wants to start understanding what you're hearing, you're very welcome.

Your guitar, an internet connection and something to join the Zoom session on.

I'd also recommend using headphones or good speakers if possible, as we'll be doing plenty of listening.

Most importantly, have your guitar within reach — this is a workshop, not just something to watch!

You'll be working things out on your own guitar and taking part in listening exercises and challenges, but you won't suddenly be put on the spot and asked to perform in front of everyone.

There will also be opportunities to ask questions throughout the workshop.

Yes. The workshop takes place live on Zoom on Saturday 30 January 2027, from 4pm–6pm UK time.

The live format means we can actually work through the process together, and you'll have opportunities to ask questions along the way.

Absolutely.

The workshop is completely online, so you can join from anywhere in the world. Just remember that the advertised time is 4pm–6pm UK time, so check what that works out as in your local time zone.

The workshop will be recorded and ticket holders will receive 30 days of replay access afterwards.

You'll get the most from attending live because you'll be able to take part in the exercises and ask questions, but you won't lose the workshop if something prevents you from being there on the day.

We'll be working through the GuitarPush Ear Training Method together.

We'll practise listening to music, finding the home note and key, following bass movement, finding chords, working out riffs and melodies, and gradually getting what we hear onto the guitar.

You'll also have opportunities to try things for yourself before I show you how I approached them.

Not necessarily!

Part of learning by ear is dealing with music you haven't already prepared.

There may be some exercises or materials provided beforehand, but some of the music we work on will be deliberately kept as a surprise so you can experience the process properly.
